AR500 Armor’s Level III+ Steel Plate is manufactured from AR650 steel, which is slightly harder than AR500 steel, giving it several features to set it apart from other armor.Most importantly, the Level III+ (see specifications below) is able to stop threats such as 7.62x39/7.62x51/5.56 M193s, 5.56 M855 penetrators, and .223/.308 WIN rounds. And unlike ceramic or polyethylene, Steel is able to take several hits from these rounds without fail. This multi-hit special threat resistance is the distinguishing quality of the Level III+.The Level III+ Steel Plates feature our patented Advanced Shooter Cut, which improves comfort and shooting ergonomics by affording you extra room for your rifle cut. It is available in both right and left-handed versions and is compatible with all standard plate carriers that accept SAPI or traditional Shooters Cut body armor (given you have an appropriate carrier size). The included FragLock™ Coat is a feature special to AR500 Armor plates, which we apply for two reasons: First, it helps reduce the dangers of spalling (when broken pieces of steel come off the plate) and fragmentation (when a bullet’s remains bounce off the plate), protecting you from the aftermath of a bullet’s impact once it has been stopped. Second, the coat gives our plates a maintenance-free shelf life of twenty years, which makes this steel plate last much longer than polyethylene or ceramic alternatives.
