M16A1 didn't have a forward assist. Not period correct at all.

M16A1’s didn’t have a:
Shell deflector
1/7 twist heavy profile barrel
A2 flash hider and stock
M4 feed ramps
All these would be considered improvements that make it more accurate, reliable and ergonomic.
Absolutely period correct? No.
Close enough to get the look without the issues the original had? Yes.

You’d rather have a rifle that may get gummed up, and be forced to break it open just to have it “look” right?

You're wrong. The forward assist is one of the changes that came with the M16A1. The original M16 did not.

Knowing how finicky ar’s can be, wouldn’t you rather have a rifle that performs, as opposed to outward appearance?

Windham makes good stuff. The C7 upper with shell deflector and A2 stock are not period correct. I suppose this would be a Vietnam era clone with modern parts. Still looks and probably functions great.

This was probably made to compete with the Brownell line. Still, not sure what the allure is for remake Vietnam American rifles given they aren't preban (86 or 94) and the actual M16A1 had less than stellar reviews (yes, I know it wasn't exactly the rifle design that was flawed but it still left a bad taste in soldier's mouth). A VZ58 clone (supposedly elite VietCong used them) would be a lot more interesting, given the price of even the Century made ones continues to rise.
