I think carbine is much more common. Pistol would either be a super small gas port hole or waaaaay overgassed

If you're running light bullets through this with hot charges and a light buffer/spring it might give you trouble. I don't see it as ideal with a 16" barrel, but it can work. Using standard loads once you're past 123gr bullets you should be sub 2000fps, and anything 185gr+ getting you subsonic. And yes, paired with an adjustable block would be more ideal.
