I wish they made this same exact gun with a 4", 5", or 6" barrel. I'd already own it if they did.

I guess I don't know...it was an uneducated statement. I don't own a Glock. My response was referring to a revolver in good condition, it tends to be idiot proof. If I were to refer someone to a gun for self defense that was a novice, I would definitely recommend a quality revolver. The statement wasn't a diss on Glock

You definantly should have just sent it in to Smith and Wesson.

Smith and Wesson has a 100% no questions asked warranty repair on their firearms. (Sometimes even on firearms that had "work" done)

I have a 686-3 6" where the ejector rod had slightly bent causing rotational friction and trigger issues.
Well this gun was made maybe late 80's even before I was a sperm in my old man's balls (25).
Needless to say, there was is no way I'm the first owner, or the second, probably not even the fifth.
All I had to do was call s&w about it, give them my address and 3 days later my ol 686 had an all expense paid trip to whereeverthefucktheyfixitat.
They gave me a claim number that I was able to check on the status daily.
2 weeks later it came back to me good as new!
Not.a.dime.paid.

And ~600 rounds later, the revolver still shoots like a dream.
I don't promote companies, but when I do, its Smith and Wesson.

Hey, good for you!
That was not my experience with smith. They did not offer to send a call tag. I was told I would have to ship it on my dime, may have to pay for the repairs and return shipping, but hey good for you.

Really considering this as my first revolver. Anyone have it and have some feedback for me? If you don't like it whats a good alternative?

Smith, I wish I could, I miss the work, but unfortunately years of work with severe machinery vibration has caused me to suffer stenosing tenosynovitis in 4 of my fingers and it makes delicate and precise work difficult if not impossible. I unfortunately don't even know anyone I would recommend these days. All the old guard is either retiring or dying.

@white23--- sorry to hear someone dumped a defective $1200 gun on ya. That sucks.

@White23
You're right, I don't even own a gun. I've only fired an air soft. I was making a general statement about jamming up. If you buy a quality revolver for every day carry and shoot it enough to be comfortable with it, I would be very confident in its performance in a necessary situation. Geeesh.

Yes, revolvers both fail and break and if you don't think they do you don't shot very much. I've had firing pins break, forcing cones crack, pawls break, main spring loose tension and crack, and on my s&w 460 the internal lock turns engages every 2 to 3 shots before I removed it..
The advantage revolvers have over a semi is the fact that it won't jam on an ammo it doesn't like. If it doesn't like the ammo it will usually either suffer poor accuracy or or maybe difficult to eject the empties.
When a revolver fails it is 99.9% mechanical and usually easy to diagnose and Autos can be ammo, magazine spring, tension, magazine lips deformed, ftf, fte, jam, and oh so many more

The fact that you "removed" the internal lock on your 460, and didn't demand that the gun be repaired seems to be a lack of your judgement . The internal lock engaging unexpectedly has been reported here and there online, but usually is rumor. The fact that it happened to you with your 460 makes me think you are a chuck Hawks plant that hates S&w or you had no idea that you had a warranty (do you really think Smith wouldn't correct that? They battle the hatred of the lock daily). You really removed it on you're own on a $1200 revolver? It locked up every two to three shots? I'm guessing S&W would have helped you out. But kudos to you for being such a gunsmith and voiding your warranty. Seems to be a fishy claim. But if it's true, why didn't you have S&w fix it?

Did you at least try and get your money back from the guy or shop that gave you a defective used gun?

Smith,
Yes, I did try for a refund. I had won on it on gunbroker, It took three or four months for me to find ammo cause it was a very new gun at the time and ammo was unobtainium. Anyway the dealer said he took it as a trade, said guy who bought it couldn't find ammo for it, and refused to refund or trade for a used 647 he had listed because there was a 3 day inspection period that was stated in the auction and I had no recourse though gunbroker because of the time it took to find out there was a problem.
With no recoil it worked fine, lock seemed to engage and un engage like it was supposed to and it had a real nice trigger, heavy but very smooth, under recoil from the Hornady flex tips it would pop the flag up so to speak. I don't know how it handled 45 long colt or 454 because I never tried those in it.
So anyway at this point my options were as I saw it
1)After calling and talking to customer service I could not get a definitive answer on if they would repair it for free under good will even though it was a close to new gun ass could be and possible never fired other than at the factory( the fired case in the box was dated from October 2005). So I would have to ship it to the service center in Comanche Texas, possibly paying for the repair and to ship it back to me.
2)pull all the lock parts and replace out of pocket(cost and availability unknown, midway and Brownell did not list parts at the time)
3) turn gun over to local gunsmith and have him repair because he can buy the parts from s&w. I don't honestly think we have any good local gunsmiths. Long wait times and a few are out and out liars.
4) If i was a scrupulous person, I could have sent it to the performance center and pay for a combat package on it then complain when it returns that they broke it if the problem still happened after they went through it.
5)disassemble and remove the flag retainer, polish contact areas, cut two coils on the mainspring while I'm there to lighten the pull and reassemble (cost, 15 to 25 minutes of my time)

I chose option 5, better trigger, no more rattling when you shake the gun and now lock does not engage under recoil. So I'm happy with it now.

White, thanks for sharing. A Good "buyer beware" message from gunbroker. In my many times of purchasing guns online, I have taken very few to the range within a 3 day inspection period. Who would ever know of an internal lock failure without firing? Sounds like a word to the wise of buying high powered used Smiths with an internal lock. Good thing you solved it. BTW, can you re time my 14-2 for me?

Good deal on a beautiful Performance Center piece. If I didn't have to pay for my Fall classes soon, I would def be all over this!

One nice looking revolver...can these be SSE 'd?

Been wanting to add a revolver to the collection (specifically one from the PC).

Gotta love the penny pinching comments below. It's a Performance Center gun that's why its ~$875, if you want to spend less you can get basically the same gun from the standard production line ~$680 - http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_764963_-1_757910_757787_757787_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y...

I love these but why would anyone spend a grand on a revolver? I think I'd rather spend a little over $500 and get a Glock 20 (10mm).

Because a revolver won't fail if in good condition (they won't have fte issues).

Glocks fail more often than revolvers?

I need me 2 or 3 of these; oh where is that tax refund? Sorry to say, but S&W is pricing themselves out of the market, and now with more competition from other countries arms manufacturers... they need to work on price issues, while keeping quality extra high... Love my MP9, 469, and Governor! Regards
