because this rifle and most Steyr firearms are sold in the European markets. They sell much more and are much more popular overseas. They are very fine rifles at this price point. Even with the additional "Panic tax" (my term for price gouging. haha) This is a fairly good deal. Steyr makes precision parts and firearms. They have a high degree of making sure their products are in spec and have much tighter tolerances then alot of american and other foreign manufacturers.

Physics works the same on either side of the Atlantic and 1/2-anything leaves too thin a wall for most manufacturers or gunsmiths comfort.
1/2x20 is a weird thread pattern for a .308. Most gunsmiths insist on 9/16 or 5/8.
