Nightforce Optics Company was founded in a small town in Idaho, called Orofino in 1992 and since then they became the established high-quality scope manufacturer and a large player in the tactical scope world. When this, a USA based company, released in 2013 its new rifle scope dubbed B.E.A.S.T., the first association was on, the decade earlier, also an American product that thrilled and excited Flashaholics about it. As some of the more informed readers will guess, the word is about the 2,300 Lumens lighting system from SureFire called Beast too, with a ridiculous price tag of $7,000.

While the U.S. military has adopted that SureFire flashlight for use on heavy machine guns for ranges up to 1,500 yards, Nightforce Optics unleashed its "BEAST" scope to reach out and touch someone all the way to the distance of incredible 3,000 yards. Generally speaking, this scope is not designed for an AR 15 or marksman shooting 100-1500 yards. The B.E.A.S.T. is intended for heavy rifles and big bullets and will allow an accomplished shooter equipped with large caliber rifle such as .375/.408 Cheytacs, .416 Barrets or .50 BMG's to successfully engage targets beyond 2,000 yards and even to 3,000 yards, which is the pretty much ballistic ultimate.

However, that incredible numbers should not be surprising since the Nightforce presents a top leader in the manufacture of the military grade tactical scopes. The acronym B.E.A.S.T. stands for "Best Example of Advanced Scope Technology," but in reality, it has nothing with enhanced size, weight, or appearance of the scope. In fact, the BEAST features tube diameter of 34 mm (1.34in) with a length of 15.37 inch and has a weight of 39oz (1,097grams). Speaking of overall weight and size, all of the High-End tactical competitors in heavyweight class of the 56mm scopes are eerily similar to each other. They are all physically large scopes, and they are all boat anchors. Most of them are quite bulky, but these scopes are intended for engaging relatively large `targets` rather than 500-yard rabbits. Considering its power, the B.E.A.S.T. is a relatively compact device allowing attachment of night vision, thermal and other accessories. Furthermore, this heavyweight champion is ideal all-around long range riflescope and perfect solution for long-range plate shooting, Military & Law Enforcement or dangerous game.

The BEAST is packed full of features since it`s serious tactical scope developed for the accomplished target shooter and U.S. military's extreme long range shooting. Without a doubt, the B.E.A.S.T. is a more advanced scope and powerhouse performer compared with the previous highly successful NF line called NXS (NXS stands for Nightforce Extreme Series) or the ATACR (Advanced TACtical Riflescope). One of the new advanced features with the B.E.A.S.T. scope is that it incorporates a 34mm tube versus the 30mm main tube on the NXS series. Because of the larger body diameter, the normally large 56mm objective lens often seem big, but when packed with a beefy 34mm main tube it seems adequately proportioned. The advantages of the 34mm tube on the B.E.A.S.T. over a 30mm body are better durability, and more importantly, it allows for additional adjustment range for both windage and elevation. The B.E.A.S.T. is very compact about its power, but on the other hand, the large 56mm objective lens requires the scope to be mounted a bit higher than normal to allow the objective not to make contact with the barrel. Knowing the rule of thumb that it's usually best to mount the scope as low on the rifle as possible this is one of those side effects with having a large tactical scope.

Like all Nightforce scopes, the B.E.A.S.T. also has a multi-part 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum tube, and according to Nightforce, the internal walls of the riflescope are two to three times thicker than the average competitor’s scope. While keeping an overall length nearly an inch shorter than the NXS, following the trend of growing dimensions of tactical rifle scopes the B.E.A.S.T. continues that trend for Nightforce as well, causing that its weight is up almost 20% over the 5.5-22x56mm NXS.

As a standard feature Nightforce includes its patented ZeroStop system, which helps your scope’s settings to return to the shooter’s established zero point after every shot.

Regarding its name "Best Example of Advanced Scope Technology" it uses some of the modern advanced features such as its unique elevation control called "i4F". This intelligent four-function elevation control has machined screws that control the elevation adjustments to 110 threads per inch. The elevation knob offers lightning-fast adjustments in .50 MOA/.2 Mil-Radian increments. Further, an integral and precise adjustment lever and 360-degree brake control provides additional height adjustments in .25 MOA/.1 Mil-Radian increments for ultimate long-range targetry. Certainly, the B.E.A.S.T. is the somewhat special scope and tends to be complex because it is designed for specialist long-range rifle allowing snipers to shoot more than 2,000 yards accurately.

The new Nightforce 5-25x56mm scope boasts an impressive 30 MOA (or 12 Mil-Rads) of elevation per revolution, which is a smart move as there are not as much windage adjustments required.

Part of the new advanced features with the B.E.A.S.T. optics is that it incorporates first focal plane reticle (FFP). The most common location of a riflescope's reticle is the second focal plane which means it is only accurate in size at one given magnification power. Unlike them, first focal plane scopes have distinct advantages and cost more to make because all types of reticle subtensions (the physical amount of space covered up by the crosshairs on a target) remain in the same visual proportion to the target across the scope's complete magnification range. That makes a first focal plane reticle particularly useful for windage leads and range estimation.
Conceiving the ultimate riflescope without multi-choice of reticules is unimaginable today, so Nightforce offers B.E.A.S.T. with five kinds of reticles, and they are MOAR (F1), MIL-R (F1), H59, MD2.0, and TReMoR3.

However, the Old School from Europe deserves credit for having excellent optical glass, exceeding the 90% light transmission with resolution and image clarity at unprecedented levels. Thanks to the collaboration between German and U.S. engineers the B.E.A.S.T had to outperform almost any other riflescope in a poor light at the shooting market.
One of the unique features found in the Nightforce NXS line, and it is carried over to the B.E.A.S.T, is that the focus knob is coupled with DigIllum digital reticle illumination. By pulling out the side focus turret activates the reticle illumination feature for low-light applications. The reticle illumination system could be adjusted for brightness intensity from very dim to extremely bright with green/ red colors. Unfortunately, to do this the shooter needs to have some small jeweler`s screwdriver, so the one drawback to this arrangement is that there is no easy brightness control.

At first glance, there is two immediate downside to the B.E.A.S.T., and this is its price, and it's weight. It is a fact that the Nightforce scopes belong in the upper price range of scopes with this optic coming in at over $3,000, but that's not even half the price from of a flashlight from the beginning of this story.

Overall, the B.E.A.S.T. riflescope tracks like micrometer with crisp, firm, and precise adjustments and quality of every Nightforce optics are absolutely stunning, and this scope is no different. As a final note one has to admit that Nightforce manufactures the premier high-power military grade tactical and competition scopes in the world. The real test was in the field where the hunters, as well as a military marksman, find that lowest 5x magnification power is useful while the perfect eye relief of 90mm or 3.54 inch is enabling use with heavy recoiling rifles like the .338 Lapua.
