Just get the walther/hk one...

I want to get the walther version but I'm having trouble finding one. Seems like everyone is sold out. Anywhere in particular you are looking?

They are not in stock anywhere and are typically $100 (AT LEAST) more expensive than the GSG when you can find them. Nor do they come with an entire new parts kit with extra stock to customize to your heart's content. Don't get me started on the mags costing double. This is a true apples and oranges conversation, the HK is a better gun for far more money and this is a more entry level plinker with lots of choices that you can still find. These "get the HK" posts are about has helpful as someone telling us about their brand new $79 SKS from 1983 when comparing modern surplus finds of Mosin Nagants.

Had one of these and sold it for the HK version - way better and not much more $$

I recently got this as a backyard range toy. First use I fired federal hp, CCI polymer coated, and CCI standard LRN. All worked with zero issues with the 22 round mags, fired over 400 rounds. However, when I tried the 110 rd drum it would occasionally fail to feed the next round. Absolutely the mag not the gun. I have seen these in plastic, this particular one has a metal receiver, much nicer. I probably would not have purchased if not metal. Overall for $300 with all the extras it is a great buy!

Ditch this and go with the hk licensed version .Mine has functioned 100%for 2 years. Cheap fun at the range and looks like the real deal.

I'm confused. What exactly are you getting here with this "conversion kit?" is it a 522 that includes a non fake suppressed 22lr short barrel as well or... I can't see to find any actual info on what it converts into.

The manufacturer got sued because the GSG-5 looked too much like a real MP5 so they had to change a bunch of aesthetic items to keep producing the rifle, the conversion kit lets you to make the gun look more like an MP5 again while allowing them to stay in compliance with the lawsuit.

anyone have one of these? I know they been out for years but they wanted to much for them when they came out imo.. and then I think I heard they was built like crap.. thoughts?

Only way I'd want one is if it SBR'ed it.

I had one for a few years and it was an awesome gun. Very reliable and accurate. The only reason I sold it was the fact I had too many (to store!) 22lr semi autos laying around. Every time I see this post I have to fight myself not to order. I don't know about the "built like crap part"...the entire frame of the gun was plastic (it's a 22lr plinker!) but everything fit nice and snug and zero rattle. I do know they had a metal framed version but it was more expensive, might be worth it though of you were going to SBR. I personally prefer the collapsible stock over the folding as it adds zero bulk when closed and is metal.

Edit: the metal receiver version is only $20 more.

Just an fyi. I have the HK version of this. It clearly specifies in the manual that using high velocity ammo is a must. The bolt spring tension can be adjusted if necessary. Remove the rear take down pin open the receiver and you'll see an Allen set screw on the back of the housing. If you loosten that it will reduce the spring tension and solve your "crappy" ammo issues. Not 100% sure if it's the same with a GSG. Hope that helps. My opinion.....22 ammo is cheap buy the good stuff.

For some reason a similar GSG 522 (with bigger faux suppressor) is one of the worst guns in my collection that has been sitting in my safe for years and collecting dust. Crazily picky with ammo, any cheap 22lr will immediately lead to multiple FTFs per mag. Cleaning is a nightmare too.

So, yes, it looks very cool, but this coolness factor disappears very quickly when you keep clearing malfunction after malfunction on the range.
Both 15-22 and 10/22 are much better choices IMO. I mean, BY FAR.
Just my 2c.

ilya0002- Very true as far as it being finicky with virtually any type of .22 LR.....especially with the drum, and ditto in cleaning it. It's GSG's version of the Sig Mosquito .22 "Jam a Matic". Mine has been collecting dust in my gun safe for another reason. I accidentally broke a tab off the inside of the trigger assembly while reassembling it (**CHEAP plastic!!) after shooting. Have been waiting months for a response from GSG on purchasing another assembly; no response on the horizon. Terrible customer service from GSG, based on my experiences. Also true- far better choices out there.

I've had some terrible feeding issues with this gun. It is also a huge pain in the ass to clean. The dissemble process is just straight terrible.

For the price it's got everything you could want, but don't expect reliability and stay FAR away from the 110 round drum, it is by far the biggest piece of overpriced garbage. RMAed 2 so far and still can't get it to feed properly without jamming terribly.
