Brand snobs are gonna hate. I have a Taurus PT1911 (aluminum frame) and a STI Spartan 9mm and they are both uber reliable and very accurate. Is the fit and finish on par with a $1000 competitor? No, but it is darn good. Oh, I also have 2 other Armscor 1911s, a 10mm and a GI 9mm and those are also GREAT guns and you CANNOT beat them for anything within $200 of them. I have never had a single malfunction from any of the above. As for whoever gave Grabagun a thumbs down, I would love to hear the back story. I have ordered many guns from them and have zero complaint.

I have a springfield 1911 in 9mm because before the ammo scare it made so much more sense to shoot 9mm because I just love the 1911 build. But I understand where you're coming from, but when someone's looking for a budget 1911, STI in 9mm is awesome quality and inexpensive to shoot compared to 45.

For all the people who have been considering the cheapy, mediocre Taurus 9mm PT1911's that have been being posted on gun.deals lately look no further. This gun has nice sights, great trigger, functions flawlessly, is an absolute tack driver, and is backed up by STI's world class customer service and did I say accurate.

You can try to save some money buy buying the cheapy Citadels, RIA's or Taurus 1911's but if your not wanting to spend around $1200 on an STI Trojan or $1350 on a Dan Wesson Pointman 9 and you want the VERY BEST 9mm 1911 under a grand this is it.

Unless you buy a stolen one you will not find a better, more accurate 9mm 1911 for anywhere close to this price

You do realize that the Spartans is made by Armscor for STI in the Phillipines the same folks who make those other "Cheapy" RIA's & Citadels.

Q: Are STI pistols made in America?

A: The Spartans are built for STI (to STI specifications and utilizing STI internals) in the Philippines by the STI division of Armscorp. All of the rest of our pistols are built right here in Georgetown, TX.

Anyway I odered one and will see how it really fairs to my 2 Taurus 1911 9mms. I hope your right.

I am well aware that only the frame and slides only are made in the Phillipines it says so right on the gun. The complete pistols themselves arent made in phillipines like the "cheapy" Citadels and RIA. "The most important" things are all done by STI. Excellent frame to slide fitting, barrel fitting, all STI internals, sights etc. and STI quality control. I currently own 3 STI pistols and althought the Spartan is less than half what I paid for the other 2 it is every bit as reliable and just about as accurate for a fraction of the cost.

I owned a RIA 22TCM and 9mm combo and it to was made in phillipines. I can assure that it was nowhere close to the same quality as the STI. The fit and finish (outside and inside), frame to slide fitting, gritty trigger and sights were nowhere near as nice as the Spartan. I really wanted to like the RIA because I wanted an affordable double stack 1911 9mm. Althought the slide to frame fit was much looser (sloppier) than the STI after less than 100 rds through the RIA the slide started to fail to return to battery (while firing) regardless of which extractor was used. After 2 trips back to RIA and a slide and frame rail polish to smooth it up failed to correct the problem I cut my losses and got rid of it.

Mine came today from Grabagun. Fast shipping and good price. Initial thoughts were it is very minimalist compared to what you get with the Taurus 1911 9mm. It only comes with one mag and there is no heal to the mag it is counter sunk in the grip. Several times I thought I had it seated only to tug on the thin lip of the mag and it came out. So you have to kind of push It in with your finger tips into the gun to make sure it is seated you can't hit it with palm of your hand like most guns to seat the mag.

Polymer trigger was kind of surprising but I understand even there $3000 guns have that. I guess I have been spoiled with my Taurus 1911 because of all the features to cost. That said the finish on this gun compared to the Taurus is much better. I see a lot of tool marks on the inside of the Taurus and things just don't look as smooth. So while the Taurus maybe feature rich the quality where it counts may not be as good. So I can live without the checkered grips.

I have not shot the gun yet but I do like the trigger when dry firing it. There is some take up in it but it has a crisp break. If this thing shoots as good as the reviews I am going to be very happy with it.

The manual looks like they printed it out at kinkos as an afterthought which is kind of funny compared to the usual slick and glossy manuals on some of my other guns.

Scottsdale Gun club had Wilson 47 D mays for $22.00 thats what you need. The 1911 works more on the "controlled feeding" concept that other guns, and a good mag is vital for performance. Polymer trigger? Hugh? Wonder what the thought process is there, on such an inexpensive part as the trigger.

The 47 D are for 1911 45s and this is a 9mm. But yes Wilson makes some good mags. I have one of their Elite Tactical 1911 9mm and like it very much. Took the gun to range today and while it was great with the mag it came with it was a jam0matic with any other 1911 9mm mag I tried. Wilson Elite Tactical and Taurus. While the Taurus 1911 9mm did fine with the STI mag. So need to find out how to get one of the STI 1911 mags. So much for the hopes that the mags would be interchangeable. Gun shot well though when using the factory mag and had good groupings.

You are correct the 47D mags are for .45 cal although they are phenominal mags. For 9mm mags Wilson Combat may not be what your looking for for a 9mm STI. There .45 mags are top notch but there 9mm mags are not so great. If you just have to have W.C. mags for your 9mm I would suggest just buying one to try before dumping a bunch of money into them. If you do a little research youll see they can be pretty dissapointing.

Wilson Combat ETM mags were the first mags I bought when I got my Trojan 9mm because the Wilson Combat mags I had for my STI Ranger III worked flawlessy through a couple thousand rounds. I didnt have much luck with the W.C. mags in either of my 9mm STI's. They were a bit to high and even after i filed them down a bit they continued to give me problems.
I have a Trojan 9mm and bought a Spartan 9mm for my son and I highly suggest STI, Metalform and Checkmate 9mm mags. All work great in both guns and for the price the Checkmate mags are hard to beat.

Slide to frame fitting is a huge Myth that doesn't effect accuracy as most believe. It can actually be a negative for a 1911. The talking points of the high end 1911 crowds are often overshadowed by practicality , dependability, and functionality.

You can't have "excellent slide fitting" and "micro fit bushings" and 2.61567892637483lb triggers in a carry gun, and you don't want much slop in a range warrior.

The truth about 1911's is that the original design was, and still is the best design, no matter how much money makers lie Les Baer and Nighthawk, and STI want to take out of your pocket for a 1911 that is most likely less reliable in battle, or on the street as you would think.

The STI gun is nice , no doubt.....but the RAI are actually really nice guns as well. The gap between expensive 1911's and cheap ones performance wise is closing rapidly.

Yep, the 1911 was made to be "sloppy" to make it as reliable as possible.

When you start trying to gain as much accuracy as possible, you are going to lose reliability. Even gunsmithing books will tell you that in black and white.
