I purchased one NIB had headspacing issue. Would not fire ammo since bolt could not close. So it was never shot tested at factory. Their pistol are all fails lately . Ill pass on this name brand now. They arent Remington anymore.

wow!!! i never saw so much hate, i bought a 700 hunter 308 out of the box sub moa doing my part, this is a great value swap the stock and throw in a timney trigger and you are under 700.00. i ring 3" steel plates at the range max distance of 520 yards. Its a point and click gun unless I just got lucky

I did exactly that. Hogue floated and bedded. Timney and for 700 in it the rifle will compete with 1500 ones.

I want to like Remington so bad but if you handle nearly any other rifle from Savage, Browning, Tikka, or Ruger you'll think a lot less of the Remington. Don't get me wrong, the Remington is a fine value, and I hate to say it, but the quality isn't what it used to be. You'll be much better served by spending a bit more for a better finished rifle.

At this price, I bought this rifle for it's barreled action. I think it's worth taking a risk. For now, I put it in a Magpul 700 Hunter stock, and will mount a one-piece picatinny rail on the receiver to mitigate minor misalignment issue. I called Remington and was told that the barreled receiver is the same as more expensive models, with differences on the finish (blued vs ceracote) and furniture.

Sounds like you're on track. I was about to order one yesterday when I stumbled across a good deal on a Weatherby Vanguard TR in 6.5 Creedmoor. The TR comes with a bedded Bell & Carlson Varmint stock, heavy 22" barrel, and good trigger. Composite stocked Vanguards have been my choice for hunting ever since I bought my first one almost thirty years ago. I hope all goes well with your 700, and we both end up with guns we really enjoy.

I called Cabela's, and they assured me that the rebate would be honored. With that settled, this rifle, out of the box, has a number of issues I would need to address to bring it up to a level where I would be happy. The stock, and blind magazine are crap, and the trigger may need to be replaced. I'm looking at solving the stock/magazine issue by picking up a Magpul 700 Hunter stock, and a Magpul 497 mag kit. Using Bud's "Price Match" they would run me $252 w/shipping. With new action screws it would still be under $270 total for the upgrades. With these upgrades the rifle should be comparable to the Remington 700 Magpul 308, #84293, which has the same trigger, but I will have saved over $200. I'm not in a big rush so I would welcome any constructive opinions, suggestions, or guidance you may have.

How do they plan on honoring the rebate if its through the manufacturer?

Remington’s quality control went out the door a long time ago. I’ve had nothing but problems with bad polished barrels to scope mount wholes missed aligned and poor shooting striflesguns

Thank you for the warning. I think your right. Over the past 25 years people have lost a lot of respect for Remington products due to quality control.

You know Remington filed for bankruptcy a few weeks ago.

Not sure how that's going to effect warranty and rebate, but gl

$100 is quite a bit to flush down the toilet. I would be pretty pissed if it didn't come through.

i'd skip the Rem 700 but i buy rifles for their factory trigger and price... Howa's or Savage have the best factory triggers these days in my opinion... just depends on do you want a Cold Hammer Forged barrel Howa, great factory trigger as well or a button rifle Savage with accutrigger... I own Howa's already but just backordered the Savage 12FV's in .308 Win the other day due to the price and trigger plus they have an excellent reputation for accuracy... I paid a couple hundred more for the Howa's with heavy barrels but 20" barrel length is handier in the woods but past 500 yards the Savage 26" barrel should do better... just my .02... buy what you like...

I would only purchase the BDL, CDL or SPS if I had no plans to change the rifle stock to an aftermarket stock. There are some beautiful commemorative stocks and precision stocks offered by Remington at higher price points.

If one has plans to utilize an aftermarket stock not offered by Remington or offered by Remington at an astronomical cost vs. buying it separately, then buying an ADL is the best route because one would not be spending extra money on factory parts (higher cost rifle stocks, floor plates and low capacity proprietary magazines) that will not be used.

I purchased this rifle (.308 ADL Varmint; 26") from Cabelas in Gonzalez, La in December of 2014 at the regular price of $399.99 and I really like it. There was also a manufacturer's mail in rebate of $35 after the purchase. I purchased the ADL version of the 700 model for the barreled action because I knew I was going to change out the stock and there was no need to spend a penny extra for a BDL, CDL or SPS stock (or a Remington rifle scope for that matter) in which I knew I was going to replace with something superior to what the manufacturer provides.

At $399.99 the Remington 700 ADL Varmint used to fit the bill/build but no longer does since Cabelas increased the price in September of 2016 to $499.99 as a regular price. This new price is only a few dollar cheaper than an SPS or SPS Varmint version of the Remington 700 and I can only consider it overpriced.

I can only wonder if Bass Pro has influenced the $100.00 price increase due to their possible takeover of Cabelas in the Spring of 2017. Bass Pro's Remington 700 prices were never this good and severely overpriced in my opinion. Only Gander Mountain has higher every day prices than Bass Pro on all variants of Remington 700s. I think it's a sad day for consumers when any ADL version of the Remington 700 exceed $400.00.

If Remington would thread barrels with common thread patterns for the individual calibers - preserving the crown with thread protection; include a picatinny scope rail and offer the 700 ADL Varmints in 6.5 Creedmoor (1:8 twist rate), only then would I consider paying the new price of $499.99.

I don't have much experience with bolt action 308s... I've only been into pistols and semi-auto rifles. Trying to branch out into more bolt action rifles--would this be a good overall gun to start my collection with? Or look more over at Tikka or Savage?

the ADL is remington's lower end line that they only manufacture for large chainstores. i would look for a deal on their regular line of 700, BDL and SPS 700 are better for example, they have floorplates etc

At the price now....with rebate on varmint barrels....you buy the magpul floorplate and stock ....have the magpul hunter minus threaded barrel for right at 700.

People swear by the 700. I have a 700 bdl in 300 win mag and love it, but only use it for hunting. I hardly shoot it at the range anymore with the price of ammo and a plethora of other guns in the collections. Sure it may be an entry level 700, but if you're just getting into it and want to learn and have fun or even do some hunting, i think it's a killer deal. You could always use it as a cheap way to get the action, and replace the stock and trigger too if you wanted. I don't know about the barrel, but generally speaking a heavy barrel like this is going to be better, but i don't have experience with this one.

Here's a pretty good review: http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2013/01/joe-grine/gun-review-remington-700-adl-varmint/...
