Description

The brand new Windham MCS-3 Rifle offers 3 Calibers in the same AR platform by simply changing out Barrels, Magazine Wells, and if necessary, the Bolt/Bolt Carrier and Magazine. Barrels are Chrome Lined for long wear and easy cleaning, machined from 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium Steel, finished in Black Manganese Phosphate, and rifled appropriately for the intended caliber. Receivers are CNC machined from forged 7075 T6 Aircraft Aluminum and finished in Hardcoat Black Anodize. Bolts are machined from Carpenter 158 Steel. The key to barrel interchangeability is on the underside of the MCS Upper Receiver (shown left). Once the Barrel Retaining Block is unlatched and moved forward, the Barrel Retaining Arms rotate out to release the barrel - ready to be replaced with the barrel of caliber choice.

In the MCS Lower Receiver, magazine interchangeability is as easy as dropping the trigger guard and pushing in the Mag Release Button. One caliber’s mag well slides off and another is substituted. Then, if required, the appropriate Bolt Carrier is inserted into the Upper, and with an appropriate magazine and the correct caliber ammo to match the barrel, the rifle is ready to fire. All Windham Weaponry barrels are clearly stamped with appropriate caliber markings.

As many others have noted, quite a few "flaws" with this system. The first one is weight. The second would be changing parts in the field and on the fly. However, the most damning aspect of this system is a guy could have a C39V2, a PSA lower with 5.56 and 300 uppers and still have some money left over for optics or ammo.

Colt offers a similar setup with the LE901. Still not sure why someone would want to pay $2k and haul around 25lbs of gear.

I have a multi-caliber system of my own. It consists of multiple guns in different calibers. Is your mind blown?

I'm surprised no one has said this yet but...This is basically the concept that the ACR (Masada) was going for from the get go, but they sold everything to bushmaster who then dropped the ball forever.

I question the reliability and accuracy of this setup. Changing barrels, adapters, parts and pieces over time would seem to me that tolerances could be a factor...imo, but who knows? Cool concept but a bit over priced

Great concept to market all in one, but you can achieve similar caliber versatility in the AR platform at I believe a much lower price point by buying dedicated uppers right? So not sure what you are paying the premium for.

Or just 1 lower and 2 uppers? Or 2 complete rifles? Still cost way less. Oh nm it's 3 calibers plus novelty tax.

These are actually made by MGI, I think. mgi-military.com. I guess Windham is just putting their name on them?

The MGI modular lower is pretty neat, but they have made then discontinued several magwell modules over the years. I have had a Magwell that takes 45ACP Grease Gun mags on order from them for over three years now. They always say it will be ready sometime in Q3 of whatever year we happen to be in when I ask. And this is an item they have actually HAD before...not in development. MGI has a really need product, but not sure why they can't get production together. They have had a 308 built on the AR15 lower advertised for years now, but it just quietly disappeared without any notice. I have had one of those on order for 3 years too!

Really cool. A bit expensive, though. I would probably just want that lower and the adapters...

I might be interested when the price comes down. I like that it can actually use AK mags instead of just 7.62x39 AR mags. I like the idea of a single rifle that can adapt to available calibers where it was all built to work together and will fit right.

Seems a little expensive to me. For right about this price you could buy an entire windham 5.56 and an entire 7.62 then buy just a .300 upper. I would rather have 2 1/2 complete rifles than have the novelty of swapping barrels and a fancy case. Just my uneducated opinion.
