Description

In the last several weeks there has been a lot of talk about Wal-Mart and rampant speculation about the giant retailer discontinuing or continuing to sell AR15s and other tactical type guns.

The Firearm Blog - Steve and I talked about the situation and felt we needed to find out one way or another what was going to happen and why. My task was to get a statement from Wal-Mart corporate in Bentonville, Arkansas and settle the question one way or the other for the readers of TFB.

A week and a half ago I contacted Wal-Mart with an official request for information on the company’s position on selling AR15s now and in the future. This afternoon I got a call from Wal-Mart’s corporate headquarters with answers to the questions I posed. These are the answers I was given.

Will Wal-Mart continue to sell AR15s in any of the retail stores?
No, Wal-Mart has discontinued selling AR15s in any of our stores.

Are there any other guns that will no longer be sold at Wal-Mart?
Yes, we have also discontinued sales of shotguns with 18 1/2 inch barrels as well as .22 rifles that look like AR15s. There will be no MSR guns of any type sold in any Wal-Mart stores.

It sounds like Wal-Mart will stop selling any product that could be labeled tactical or defense related would that be true?
Yes that’s true we will not be selling accessories for the AR15 and other guns. We are getting back to selling only hunting and sporting guns and accessories.

Would this include the Blackhawk brand of add ons for AR15s and various shotgun add ons?
Pretty much any product related to tactical guns and gear will be or has been discontinued.

I guess my next question would be why? Is it the current political climate?
No not at all. Wal-Mart only sells guns in one third of our stores and sales of this type of gun and accessories have dropped off a great deal. It’s a business decision and a decision made by our customers request we sell more traditional guns and accessories. In order to expand our offerings of traditional guns we had to make more space and discontinue guns that were not selling. This is really about providing our customers with what they want to purchase.

So I guess this also ties into the run on AR15s a while back and the subsequent reduced sales. Will this be a permanent decision or at some point could Wal-Mart decide to start selling AR15s again?
I see this as a permanent decision at this point. Again this was a financial decision due to slow sales and what our customers have let us know they prefer to see at Wal-Mart which is a wider selection of traditional rifles and shotguns.

Sir I thank you for your time and answering our readers questions. I’m sure our readers will appreciate it.
You’re welcome thank you for contacting us.

That pretty much sums up the situation with Wal-Mart for now and apparently in the future. If you happen to feel abandoned because you purchase these now discontinued products from Wal-Mart we understand your frustration.

It wasn’t the news I hoped to bring you but it’s done and won’t be changing. One thing I didn’t see coming was Wal-Mart discontinuing anything and everything MSR/tactical related. If you live in an area with a Wal-Mart that does sell guns you better get them while you can. I understand there are some pretty hefty discounts.

Dayum! Where am I gonna gets my Blackhawk accessories now?! I's just 'bout to head to my local Wally Mart to snatch me up a DPMS (the BEST AR ever made, by the way), and I's gonna' slap me on some SWEET Blachawk furniture, a Chinese quad rail, and a Sightmark laser.

Now I gots to git me a crappy AR, like a Colt or a Knights Armament, and some shitty Daniel Defense sights. Booo hoo!

I'm madder than a dickless bull in a breedin' stall. I'm gonna' have to go kick my wife in the cooter, cuz I cain't buy my tacticools and my Preparation H at the same place no more!

---Good riddence. WalMart is a shithole, anyway.

Right now the AR-15 market is just dead. I always liked the 30'06 1903 Springfield Armory bolt action. A gun that would give a nice bruise in your chest. But now, after the panic buying was over and all the factories kept producing, prices dropped like yesterdays 1k drop in the stock market. I saw a AR-15 which would have cost $2000 for $459! Thats wife will approve this for my birthday money. Now I have joined the club, and really enjoy the rifle.

Glad Walmart is out of the market. I hope the gun show folks will find great benefit from having a monster move out of the market. Also I shop at Costco they treat their employee's with respect, and give them health insurance, also a living wage. Walmart just uses welfare to make up the money they don't pay their people. This is fact checked by a friend who processes new cases at welfare/food stamp, place.

Fuck walmart. I will be buying all of my ammo in bulk online and never purchase another thing from their sporting goods area. I will get my deer blocks from the farm supply and everything else online.

I am sure your boycott of their entire "sporting goods section" will greatly reduce their stock value. Do you protest foreign oil by not using it in your weedeater?

LOL, talk about a half-ass statement.

OK, I don't get it. Really? If you count on WallyWorld for your AR shit, you are somewhere between a poser, and a hoser. Back to the basement and your video games for you! Can we block WW from this site now?

Where are those few guys who swore off the "anti-gun" Dicks because they made the same decision years ago? Probably at Walmart in their little electronic cart waiting for the 22lr to be replenished ;)

Walmart prices have never been competitive when it comes to the AR15's they offered.

pbsoko,

Not sure if I agree with your assessment, pre- 2012, their prices for the AR's were hard to beat on most of them, in fact most brick and mortar stores and most brick and mortar gun shops couldn't compete.

Now with ammo and accessories, I fully agree, their pricing was on the high side, plus tax always hurt as well.

As far as Walmarts explanation of them not being popular, that's just a load of BS, up down and sideways. The reason I say that is that the AR caliber munitions were empty shelf after empty shelf, pretty much from 2012 up until last year. And it was no industry secret that AR munitions were generating boatloads of revenue from all stores that sold them, when they could find it.

During 2012 to 2014, there was PLENTY of hunting calibers readily available on Wal Mart shelves. Walmarts position is anything but honest. Political correctness at it's best

So you are basing their movement of AR rifles vs their movement of AR compatible ammo? Which do you think Walmart sells more of; toilets or toilet paper? Not trying to be a smart ass (comes natural!) but I have never been tempted to buy a toilet or an AR at Walmart (both were always covered in dust BTW) but frequently purchased both TP and ammo there. Want an AR? Buy online or at a real gun store. Want a toilet? Home Depot or Lowes are your ticket. Want a basic .308 or a 30.06? Walmart might just have you covered. I think Walmart has finally realized only the guys who cannot see their penises buy AR’s at Wally World.

I worked at a Wal-Mart in the mid 90's. In sporting goods. I was a Dept. manager (yippie). I could special order pistols at that time, special order anything, from Lipsey's or Sports South mainly. But,
no M1A rifles or AR-15s. I mean hell, at that time ARs were Colt and Olympic. I was told that M1A rifles were military rifles, so they couldn't be ordered. Yet we carried Mini-14s, a military rifle in some countries, and a smaller version of the M1A. I guess what I am getting at is, times change. I was VERY surprised when they started carrying all of the "tactical" stuff that was once considered "taboo". I really think it all boils down to, wait for it, MONEY! The AR and defensive shotgun markets are FLOODED, to say the least. Wal-Mart didn't get to be a Megalo-maniac type operation by doing stupid shit. Yeah, I know, all of their guns are second's also. But yeah WooHoo2you. Ammo? Some good deals when they're in stock. AR style rifles? $800 to $1000 dollars? They were late to the party!

I think Walmart moved towards “tactical” stuff after hating the government and / or anyone with an opinion slightly different than yours become ‘cool’ and somehow patriotic (its not BTW)…now the fad has worn off or consumed as many mean looking guns as the market allowed. Like you said, Walmart was late to the game.

This is a business decision not some anti-gun conspiracy.

If it was pure politics they would have done this a long time ago. I know the sporting goods dept manager of a wal-mart and he said they dont sell for crap. Now IF they stopped selling 223 or all handgun ammo that would be obvious. Wait...........do they carry 223 at all?

Yes they carry 5.56 and .223.

Maybe they realize what the outcry would be like if this were publicized as a political capitulation to the likes of "Everytown (for incremental disarmament)?" Maybe Bloomberg and his anti-2A ilk and front groups are taking a quiet victory lap, and heading over to Cabelas with a "look see, it doesn't have to be a public spectacle with a negative backlash" motive seeking another to capitulate message to the execs. If I were a gun grabber that's how I'd approach these kinds of businesses.

With margins on them dwindling I can see it as an easy choice for the gutless Walton suits.

I bet Walmart's AR sales are a drop in the bucket vs the rest of the market. Those mean anti-gunners must be the playing the very LONG, SLOW game of preventing 1 out of every 500 AR's sold due to impulse purchases by somehow forcing the world’s largest retailer to remove like 3 SKU’s from their inventory that only (per Walmart’s statement) 1/3 of their stores that even sold guns carried. Please say “slippery slope.”
