I bought one of these from grabagun for my customers and I guess we got a lemon. The trigger would stick in the fully compressed fire position after shooting. The only way to get it out would be to torque the chamber further and then the trigger would reset. We also had bullets that would not fit into two chambers but the same bullet would fit in the other chambers. Should note it was cheap steel ammo. Just my experience with this revolver.

I'm tempted to buy another just for this price, and because I love this gun, maybe gift it to my daughter someday.. I impulse bought my SP101 at a gun show, paid a lot more for it than this. Reading up on how to work on Ruger revolvers was fun and educational if you like amateur gunsmithing. Now I have a police trade in 4" GP100 with a RedHawk red ramp front sight and adjustable rear to go with my 2 1/4" SP101, both with matching snake pattern wood panel grips, never even considered the rubber Hogues. Takedown and assembly is a piece of cake now, wolf springs, polished contact points, shims in trigger and hammer, and the triggers now are awesome. Fun if you like to tinker, easy to fix the biggest complaint - the heavy trigger, and I've never had a light primer strike. My daughter shoots 38s accurately at 7 yards no problem. Also added an XS Big Dot front sight. Full load 357s out of the SP101 will wake you up, weak hand shooting unprepared will ring your bell. Easy CCW too, these guns will outlast me, go for it if you think you'd like a pocket 357 magnum, powerful but not punishing like a scandium. Of course being able to inspect one before purchasing is wise, you can see whether the hammer is contacting the frame or is more centered, I didn't know what to look for when I impulse bought. Still, shims are an easy fix and you'll probably install some anyway.

Why does the compare prices box on this page say buds is $356? Not accurate.

Looked at these as a compliment (possible concealed carry) for my 40 year old security six with a 4" barrel. I have been thrilled with the service I have gotten from Ruger over the years and they really stand behind their guns. As grebnaws said the fit/finish is below what the older guns have but the price point on this is great!

I got mine from grabagun. After picked it up from my ffl, I noticed the finish is very rough: sharp and irregular edges, dents on edges, uneven machining, overmachined areas.... Much worse than taurus. As a $469 gun, it doesn't show the corresponding craftsmanship as advertised. If you are sensitive to cosmetic issues, don't buy this gun online, you may get a lemon. buy one at your local gunshops where you can check the overall finish. If you just want a gun to shoot, you can buy a windicator 357 for only $270.

I have a handful of Rugers. Two SP101s, two LCRs, two security sixes, and one gp100. My DAO sp101 is Rough with a capital R. It has less slop than our other sp101 but some of the external grinding is really wonky and uneven. The cylinder stop is so rough that it gouged an ugly line in the cylinder before it had ever fired a shot. The other sp101 has better finishing outside but was rusty inside and has very loose hammer and trigger fit. It was rusty and dry enough inside to lock up the gun. The gp100 has really sloppy hammer and trigger and a trigger that stacks unfavorably IMO. Lockup is still very tight on all of them and function 100%. I am not particularly happy with the triggers even after full internal polishing on them all, plus a spring swap plus shim job on two of them. I can't argue with how they function and shoot. The two LCRs have great triggers out of the box. One of the LCRs had an out of spec cylinder gap and was promptly and professionally handled by Rugers customer service. Despite these complaints I am Ruger fan and think they are great revolvers, but you may want to view them as works in progress if you are particular about their triggers. New S&W may not be any better considering the price, and I would trade any of them straight across for an good security/service six. They are superior in every way, except perhaps strength to the gp100.

Rough finish, rust, and very loose hammer and trigger fit among other problems and you still consider them great revolvers? I always thought Ruger was top of the line, especially for revolvers. I'm surprised that you've had so many problems with them.

After all that they are a "great" revolver? That's like saying the cast, characters, plot, and screenplay sucked; but it was a "great" movie because it successfully started and finished.

It is intended to be a summary of criticisms. Reliability and accuracy win out. Without a lifetime of hard use I cannot fill in the rest of the screenplay with praise. They are not custom firearms and I give high praise to Rugers service. I have worse things to say about new Smith & Wessons at twice the price.

i was thinking about getting one from them. i live in california so windicator is not an option.

Easily one of Americas best revolvers. I have a 2.25" DAO, but really like my 3" best. Sent the 3" to Gemini Customs. if you're a revolver guy you need an SP101.

The price is tempting. I own one Ruger and I am just not a huge fan of the trigger pull compared to Smith. Is the trigger what you had custom work on?

Does bang every time, and 357 smack. What more could you want?

(A GP101. It's Ruger better wheelgun)

Well, I don't know if they made a GP 101 at the time I wrote this, but they only make the GP 100's which is, indeed, a much better revolver. The shortest model has a 3" barrel, but it also has a big, cushy Hogue grip and stouter stainless. The GP100 runs $70 more MSRP than the SP101 and weighs 11 oz. more.

IMHO, it's worth the extra money.
