Strangely enough ukrain was buying these for $65k a pair. Clown world for sure.
Unlikely… those are not digital sets.
Even Russian admitted that Ukrainian were transitioning to digital encrypted transmission long before the war began and had it 100% completed.
Russian army was not ready to deal with that and took large losses at the beginning of the war because Ukrainians were able to listen to their analog broadcasts when they could not do the same.
Eventually Russians realized that using something like UV-5R is too risky and started acquiring digital radios in China. It is not clear how successful and widespread it was.
To be clear , it is not legal to US private citizens licensed or not to use encrypted radio transmission with one exception what is operation of unmanned aircraft (drone). Digital modes like DMR or D-STAR available in some radios are not using signal encryption.
Bottom line - assuming you have a ham radio license, and can legally use these devices, it still will be an open analog transmission that everyone can listen (no license required to listen)
So, the Amazon seller I bought these from was StepRite-US - After trying many different things I could not actually determine what was defective. It could have been the radios, the chargers or the radio's. I tried everything to make these things work. I was getting error codes from both chargers. I sent them back today.
You can make the cheap programming cables for these work a lot of the time, but I'll echo everyone that says to just buy an FTDI cable. Also, if you're buying these to use as an analog scanner, they're slow as crap and the squelch doesn't work great. I think I get a lot of interference on UHF from electronics in the house. Still neat radios to get into the hobby.
