What would possess anyone to spend $2K+ on such a scope?

They’re cheaper from the manufacture and I’m sure you can find them cheaper from another store, but that titanium scope Mount probably cost a Fortune, https://www.sigsauer.com/tango6t-1-6x24-mm.html

Except it's not titanium.
It's 7075-T651 with titanium "mounting hardware" according to Sigs military site.
BTW, new .Mil scope is made by Vortex......unless you've been blind. It's a big blocky smart scope.

Well, by the way “buddy” before you go talking to me like you’re some know it all (know it all), cause you sure do not know what you’re talking about, The new Vourtex NGSW-FC (FC in case you’re wondering stands for, Fire Control) are only for the Next Generation Squad Weapons, 6.8 rifle and light machine gun, not the rest of the military guns. The Vortex Optics subsidiary, Sheltered Wings, will be building as many as 250,000 of the optics systems over the next ten years, for a starting price of about $2.7 billion—in case you’re wondering, that works out to $10,800 per unit, although that price doesn’t just include the optic but likely a support/repair/maintenance support structure, that is only 250,000 that is just enough to cover The next generation squad weapons Sig Sauer is making for the US Army, so no it’s not the“new”military scope,
The Sig Sauer tango6T scopes are to cover the M4A1 rifles and the HK417 designated marksman rifles,
The Sig Sauer contract is around $77 million they did not specify anywhere as to how many scopes they were to deliver to United States Army and United States Army special forces.

As for the scope mount material you are probably right, I seem to recall now that you mention it I read about that somewhere.

Pretty special way you think of yourself there "Buddy".
Exactly how many soldiers do you think are going to be fielding rifles ?
You do know that the new Pig....I mean Sig...rifles are REPLACING the M4 and the HK, right ?
Won't happen next week, but all weapons fielded by .mil will be the new 6.8mm or .277 Fury with the 5.56 being totally phased out.
The large side benefit for .gov is that there won't be any new lake city 5.56 being produced as they want civilians to not have ammo access.
It's a deep well, don't think shallow or you'll miss all the twists and turns.

You are partially right, the Sig Sauer MCX Spear/NGSW will only replace the M4 and in the United States Army only,
The United States Marines just updated their rifles in 2018 with the HK416 (which US Army should’ve done in the first place) so they won’t be updating their weapons for years to come,
The US Navy and Air Force don’t seem to care because their rifles do not require performance like the army and marines, except their special forces which seem to use whatever they want,
As for the HK417 the army just adopted it last year as a designated marksman rifle so it’s not going anywhere either and the scope has been chosen for it already, which is the Sig Sauer tango6T,
As for the army’s choice of the 6.8/277Fury, it was stupid,
the head shed does not know anything about the battlefield, I have not served yet and I know a lot more about the battlefield and they’ll ever know,(that is scary IMO) they did need to update the M4, but they chose the wrong rifle, if they wanted a piston rifle they should’ve gone with the MCX Spear LT (here’s a link in case you have not heard of it
https://www.sigsauer.com/mcx-spear-lt.html... )
in 556 or use that new 6mm ARC, (that the DOD adopted!)
Or if they didn’t wanna go to gas piston, go with a new Daniel defense RIII or GEISSELE automatics,
Just as long as it’s not 6.8 for the average soldier to have carry, now sure the rifle they adopted is good for designated marksman, but it is not good for combat, the Soldier has a very limited amount of ammunition, the rifle it is heavier, ammunition is heavier. The magazines only have 20 rounds, It was just stupid, and we are not facing any armies that have advanced armor plates that are M855 green tips wouldn’t go through, and if they did want something more powerful, go with the 6.mm ARC that’s a bad round, and I think you can get 30 rounds or close to 30 rounds in a magazine, and it fits in regular AR15’s,
Here’s some food for thought,
The only Country that has body armor that the United States military have to worry about is the United States law-abiding citizens,
as I said food for thought:)
