Not sure I follow... .17hmr isn't much different in price, .17wsm is more. The success of the PMR30 clearly demonstrates people still like the 22wmr cartridge.
Although to me, a handgun in any of the rimfire rounds except 22LR seems more of a fun gun novelty than a tool. Nothing wrong with that, but that's just my feeling.
The availability and cost of ammunition affect the popularity and viability of many cartridges. The .17 HMR as well as the .22 Magnum generally cost as much as economy loads for 5.56 NATO, 9mm Parabellum, .38 S&W, etc. A quick check of this site generally proves that true. Too, finding .17 HMR and .22 Magnum can be much more challenging.
In a rifle, what factors make choosing the .17 HMR or .22 Magnum a better choice than 5.56 NATO? In a pistol, what factors make choosing a .22 Magnum a better choice than 9mm Parabellum, .38 S&W Special, etc? Unfortunately, and having absolutely nothing against the .22 Magnum or .17 HMR, I feel it is the answers to these questions that spell the demise of the .22 Magnum and the .17 HMR.
I guess if someone can afford to pay over $800 for a .22 Magnum revolver, they can afford to purchase the ammunition. But it is unlikely there will be many who feel so inclined. And those purchasing lower cost firearms are likely to consider cost as well as availability important to their choice of ammunition and caliber.
Just my 2¢.
You gotta love the quality of a real Smith & Wesson revolver. I just have to wonder whether or not the price premium is worth it anymore. $819 for a 22 magnum? I realize that a Taurus can often be a poor stand-in for a S&W, but if one can purchase a Taurus stainless 941 5" (http://www.kygunco.com/taurus-941ss5-22-mag-revolver-5-matte-stainless-8-round-25280...) for well under half the price, one must wonder: who's making the poor choice? A real S&W for $819 or a reasonably good alternative for $360?
Rumor has it this copy of the Colt Detective Special is going to be offered in .22 LR.

I had a Rossi (Taurus) that suddenly stopped catching the hammer in single action mode. Luckily, it was while I was dry firing over spent rounds to become more familiar with the trigger break. It was sent to Taurus and after it came back was immediately sold. I will not own another Taurus/Rossi, and really am not interested in a foreign firearm, with the exception of a 9mm (Walther).
Of the two .22 Magnum options given, I would choose neither. Rather I would consider a Ruger or, if money is a serious consideration, the Pathfinder from Charter Arms. If I were considering a S&W, it would be in a different caliber.
Way overpriced for a revolver chambered in a dying cartridge that is already over-priced per round. Better off buying a .38 Special, etc.
Otherwise, a very nice S&W.
