In 1996, the first USP Compact versions were launched. These are smaller versions of the standard USPs, and they come in all the same cartridge options as the full-size models, and additionally the .357 SIG. The USP Compacts have reduced size and weight compared to the USPs with a big frame. The Compact variant's magazines can include a handgrip extension to better fit the shooter's hand. The grip size and trigger reach have been reduced, which improves shooting ergonomics and optimizes concealability. The USP Compact includes a bobbed hammer with a flat rubber exterior thumb grip as standard equipment. The mechanical recoil reduction mechanism present on big frame USPs has been replaced with a specifically created flat compression spring that is located in the captive recoil spring assembly by a polymer absorber bushing.
