The SR9 is Sturm Ruger's first large-caliber striker-fired pistol that they created and produced. The "safe action" of the striker fired SR9 is similar to that of the Glock. When the slide cycles with this kind of action, the striker is only partially cocked; when the trigger is pressed, it is fully cocked and discharged. This type of trigger pull is considered excellent for law enforcement and self-defense applications due to safety considerations. The SR9 has a locked breech and is recoil operated. It has a 17-round staggered column box magazine (double-stack magazine), but it is also available in a 10-round variant for locations with limited capacity. The Ruger SR9 is more comfortable to shoot because of the pistol's extremely low slide profile, which keeps the barrel axis close to the shooter's hand, reduces muzzle rise, and speeds up aim recovery during rapid shooting sequences. The frame is made of fiberglass-reinforced nylon polymer, which is resistant to warping or failure, and the slide is offered in either brushed or blackened through-hardened stainless steel. The frame is available in olive drab or black. A reversible backstrap on the SR9 enables the owner to choose between a flat or arched grip housing based on personal taste. The SR9 also has a Picatinny rail for installing tactical lights and laser sights. The SR9 has multiple safety devices such an ambidextrous manual thumb safety and magazine release.
